The National Building Museum was designed by Montgomery C. Meigs, the U.S. Army quartermaster general in 1887. Its impressive architectural features include the spectacular interior columns and a frieze, sculpted by Caspar Buberl, stretching around the exterior of the building featuring Civil War soldiers in scenes mirroring those on Trajan’s Column and the Horsemen Frieze of the Parthenon.
Casper Buberl created the frieze which includes 28 different scenes. It totals 1,200-foot in length and includes over 1,300 figures. The sculpture includes infantry, navy, artillery, cavalry and medical components, as well as quartermasters due to the affiliation with Meigs role during the civil war.
