A renowned portraitist, genre painter, and watercolorist, Gustave Jean Jacquet began his artistic pursuits under the guidance of William Adolphe Bouguereau at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Jacquet quickly assimilated all that he was taught, and was accepted into the Paris Salon of the Societe des Artistes Francais at the age of nineteen, where he debuted with two paintings titled La modestie (Modesty) and La tristesse (Sadness). After his initial exhibition, Jacquet's style changed drastically and was no longer reflective of Bourguereau's manner. Jacquet paid great attention to minute details in the fashions of the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries.
