Karl Frans Philippeau specialized in painting genre scenes of Italian subject matter reminiscent of the Dutch master painters.  Born in Amsterdam in 1825, Philipeau received a thorough academic training, studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and also at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
