"The increasing urbanization of England in the late 19th century created a growing nostalgia for rural life.  Hunt excelled at these slightly romanticized portraits and pastoral scenes, often portraying pets and domestic animals elevated to the status of family members.  Hunt's talent derived from a family of animal painters; his father and two brothers also made their careers as animal/sporting artists.  Taught to paint by his father, Walter Hunt exhibited over 19 paintings at the Royal Academy, making his debut their at age twenty."
