15 Star US Flag, 60.5 by 35.5 Inches
The Star Spangled Banner
This Flag became the Official United States Flag on May 1st,1795. Two stars were added for the admission of Vermont (the 14th State on March 4th, 1791) and Kentucky (the 15th State on June 1st, 1792, and was to last for 23 years. The five Presidents who served under this flag were; George Washington (1789-1797), John Adams (1797 - 1801), Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809), James Madison (1809-1817), and James Monroe (1817-1825).
Offered is a large, all cotton, fifteen-star flag. This flag was discovered, in 1992 in a family summer cottage in Whitehall, Michigan. The property belonged to their family since it was built in 1910. At the time, it was owned by the 100 year old lady that occupied the home. She had inherited a vast collection of flags that we had been allowed to obtain. It is understood that this flag was likely on display during political rallies and patriotic holidays by the political family that owned it.
This flag holds a branding from Bulldog. Bulldog was not a maker but rather a brand name for the sewn cotton flags made by the Dettra Flag Co. of Oaks, Pennsylvania. It was trademarked in 1911.
Dettra introduced its "Bull Dog Bunting" line, which became famous for its heavy-duty, 2-ply all cotton construction. The brand was widely known for its exceptional durability and vibrant colors. You will see there are no holes in this flag and there is very little discoloration. This flag was stored properly and was used infrequently. These flags had been produced using 100% organic cotton fibers that readily absorb moisture. However, when Dettra originally manufactured these flags mid-century, they heavily marketed them as being "moth proof" which may account for the lack of moth holes that one might expect.
